ABOUT THE PROJECT

Since 2013, students from the Master 2 Cultures et Métiers du Web at Université Gustave Eiffel (France) and the Film & Visual Media Technology Department at Dong-Eui University in Busan (South Korea) have collaborated each year on interactive documentaries, tracing the traces of Korean history — from the streets of Busan and Seoul to the memory of May 1980 in Gwangju. A partnership that led to a double-degree programme between the two universities in 2019.

Each fought in their own way. This documentary follows artists — singers, painters, writers — who carry their shared trauma through their work. 2021 Screenshot of Histoire d'un Film 16mm documentary website Histoire d'un Film 16mm Forty years after the events in Gwangju, a super-16mm film enriches the visual archive of the May 18 insurrection. What remains of this film, its author, its journey, its intentions, its emotions? 2020 Screenshot of Les Commémorations documentary website Les Commémorations du Soulèvement In 1980, the students and citizens of Gwangju rose up for democracy and freedom. Brutally suppressed, the uprising left many dead and wounded. How has it been commemorated in the decades since? What place does it hold in Korean memory and society? 2019 Screenshot of C'était un jour de mai documentary website C'était un jour de mai After watching A Taxi Driver in a Parisian cinema, a group of friends decides to investigate the events surrounding the Gwangju Uprising of May 18, 1980. Their research leads them to the city itself, where a Chonnam University student guides them through the sites of memory. 2018 Screenshot of Souvenir de Gwangju documentary website Souvenir de Gwangju In 1980, the closure of Chonnam University in Gwangju provoked a student uprising massively repressed in bloodshed. Today regarded as the emblem of South Korea's democratic aspirations, this documentary traces the genealogy of the photographs that shaped our knowledge of the event.
